Google Product Price Markup Updates for Retailers

Google Product Price Markup Updates for Retailers

Google has recently announced it is allowing retailers the opportunity to use different types of prices within structured data. This will be especially useful for any online retailers who want to show price reductions and offers or member-only prices.

What are the changes?

Their updated documentation shows that retailers can now add some new types of pricing to their web pages that can then be eligible to be displayed in various positions in Google Search, including:

  • The shopping knowledge panel
  • Google Images
  • Popular product results
  • Product snippets.

There are three kinds of pricing now on offer:

  • Active price – the current price for the product.
  • Strikethrough price – the higher-price that a product on sale was previously listed at. This can feature a strikethrough on the price, to help show users it’s no on sale.
  • Member price – the exclusive price for members only (if you have such a loyalty program in place).

These new options can offer retailers a nice advantage to stand-out in what is a crowded and competitive space. Anyone jumping on this now is going to get a head-start on others.

How to add the structured data

Google’s recommended steps for doing this are:

  1. Add the required properties within the relevant page or pages of your website
  2. Follow their specified guidelines
  3. Validate the code using the Rich Results Test
  4. Use the URL Inspection tool within Search Console to test the results
  5. Submit a sitemap (if you don’t have this automated within Search Console).
