OpenAI Launches GPT-Live: A New Voice Model for AI Search

OpenAI launched GPT-Live on 8th July 2026, a new model that powers ChatGPT Voice, used by more than 150 million people per week.

Here’s what the latest model offers and what it means for brands.

What Is GPT-Live?

The original ChatGPT Voice relied on three separate models; one to transcribe speech, one to generate a response and one to convert that response back into audio.

Advanced Voice Mode was then launched in September 2024, combining them into a single audio-in/audio-out model; however, this worked in rigid, turn-based exchanges.

GPT-Live takes a different approach. It’s built on a full-duplex architecture, meaning it can listen and speak simultaneously rather than waiting for a person to finish talking before replying.

Rather than trying to do everything itself, GPT-Live can now hand off complex tasks such as a web search or a multi-step problem, to OpenAI’s frontier model, currently GPT-5.5.

Alongside the more natural back-and-forth, ChatGPT Voice can now surface visual cards mid-conversation, such as weather forecasts or a map of nearby locations, without the person needing to switch out of voice mode.

GPT-Live also adds live translation; it’s now able to listen in one language and respond in another in real time.

OpenAI says conversations can also run considerably longer without losing context, with the team behind the new model having tested 30-40 minute sessions.

Users can also select a reasoning level depending on whether they want a quick answer or more considered replies.

OpenAI Is Rolling Out Two Versions of GPT-Live

GPT-Live-1 is the full-size model, available to all paying users, whether you’re on the Go, Plus or Pro tier. It’s positioned as the smarter, more capable version with fuller access to delegate to GPT-5.5.

GPT-Live-1 mini is a smaller, more efficient version for Free users. It carries the same core full-duplex architecture but is the lighter-weight variant.

Both are now live on iOS, Android and ChatGPT.com, with an API release planned for developers and enterprises.

What This Looks Like For Marwick Clients

Destinations & Resorts

Travel searches tend to rely on multi-step, research-heavy queries that GPT-Live is now built to delegate; comparing dates, checking availability, pulling in weather and maps mid-conversation.

Destinations with accurate, structured availability and location data are best placed to be pulled into the reply.

Outdated availability or mismatched location data may actively surface a wrong answer, potentially sending the searcher to a competitor.

E-Commerce

Product comparison and discovery are natural fits for voice-led search.

As GPT-Live edges closer to handling research and decision-making conversationally, product feeds, reviews and structured data become even more important for your e-commerce store to be surfaced.

If your feed has gaps or you’re light on review data, GPT-Live may compare you unfavourably or leave you out of the comparison altogether.

Food & Beverage

“What’s a good place near me for X?” is a common voice query.

Accurate, consistent listings across Google Business Profile and other structured sources become more important than ever for food and beverage brands, now that recommendations are coming from an AI assistant.

If your GBP hours or location details are wrong, GPT-Live’s mid-conversation map card may turn a discovery moment into a lost booking.

Outdoor

Outdoor and adventure searches tend to be research-heavy and multi-step, such as trail conditions and weather windows. GPT-Live now hands off these to the frontier model mid-conversation.

Brands with well-cited, detailed content are better positioned to be the source that gets pulled into those answers.

Thin or unsourced content risks being skipped entirely in favour of a competitor’s page that the model trusts more.
