Google Maps Elevates Significance of Photos in Latest Update

Google is introducing a fresh interface for Google Maps search results, emphasising photos linked to Google Business Profile listings. Termed a “photo-first” search result layout, this feature is now live in France, Germany, Japan, the U.K., and the U.S.

The updated interface showcases photos prominently above other details in Google Maps listings, such as company names, star reviews, addresses, and phone numbers. Google prioritises photos in response to the recognition that, particularly in local searches, users desire visuals of food, attractions, venues, and more. The aim is to present better-organised search results, offering an immersive experience for users.

For activities and dining, thematic results will soon be globally available on Android and iOS in the upcoming weeks, according to Google.

The selection of photos is determined by artificial intelligence (AI). Google employs algorithms that analyse billions of images shared by the Google Maps community, utilising advanced image recognition models. This ensures a curated selection of photos for users.

This update holds significance for business owners looking to improve their local SEO, urging them to be mindful of the photos displayed in their local maps listings. Through Google Business Profiles, owners can upload their own photos and encourage customers to contribute positive images when reviewing their business on Google Maps and Local.
